Carpentry is the largest and oldest building trade in todays construction industry. A union carpenter is a craftsmen who is trained in the use of tools, equipment and materials that allow him to work on a variety of construction projects. These include single and multi-family homes, office buildings, bridges and highways.
No matter which projects Union carpenters are building, Union contractors can be certain that their union craftsmen are trained and skilled in the most up-to-date construction methods. Union contractors also know that their Union carpenters are professionals who arrive at their jobs on-time, with the correct tools of the trade and industry knowledge. This insures that each project is completed on time, on budget and to the highest standard of quality workmanship. Union contractors have come to rely on this fact and so have their customers and our community.
The work we do.
Union carpenters possess the superior training and trade skills necessary to perform a wide variety of construction projects. Some of these include:
- Residential and light construction projects; single and multi-family homes
- Commercial construction projects
- Heavy construction projects with and without reinforced concrete
- Heavy timber construction
- Prefabricated building units using open, closed and fold-out panel systems
Joining the Union and becoming an apprentice.
As an apprentice through the North Central States Regional Training Center you have the opportunity to learn the most advanced trade skills available to professional carpenters any where in today’s construction industry.
Once you are enrolled in the program you will receive a combination of formal classroom instruction and on-the-job training, with one of our many union contractors who will sponsor you through your apprenticeship. These are good jobs in your new trade that offer good wages and benefits. Apprentices start at 50% of the union journeyman hourly wage rate. All training program costs are paid in full. Wages are then periodically increased to 90 or 95% of the journeymans rate as you complete your training, usually in your fourth year.
Once you are in enrolled in the apprenticeship program you will be eligible to join one of the local unions that make up the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters. As a union member you will be part of brotherhood of superior craftsmanship and training. You will be represented by professional union management and covered by a collectively bargained agreement at the local and national level. This will insure that wherever you go to work in the trade, your superior wages and benefits will follow you.

Apprenticeship training
Apprenticeship training at the North Central States Regional Training Center is a program of formal training, that over the past years has consistently graduated professional union carpenters, who are fully competent in all aspects of their trade. Combining classroom instruction with 7000 hours of on-the-job training while under the expert direction of journeymen carpenters, apprentices learn and become competent in all areas of the carpenters trade. This includes trade skills, industry knowledge and proficiency and confidence while on-the-job.
The comprehensive training curriculum includes classroom instruction combined with on-the-job training. There are 7 training areas with 52 skill blocks each designed to insure that apprentices develop trade skills in each of the following areas:
- Framing with metal and wood studs including knowledge of all trade tools
- Exterior finishing - Interior finishing - Interior systems including retail displays and other light commercial applications - Concrete form work
- Supplementary carpentry skills including blue print reading, welding, scaffold installation - Health and safety training

Skill enhancement for journeymen
As a journeyman, the North Central States Regional Training Center also offers you a great training opportunity. Here you can learn new trade skills and sharpen your existing skills by learning the most up-to-date carpentry methods available to professional carpenters any where in today’s industry. There are health and safety classes designed to help you maintain all appropriate OSHA certifications and make you more professional, safer and confident at the job site.
There are 7 training areas for journeymen to enhance knowledge and trade skills. These include:
- Framing with metal and wood studs
- Exterior finishing
- Interior finishing
- Interior systems
- Hardware installation -Supplementary carpentry skills including blueprint reading, welding, scaffold installation - Health and safety training - 27 different areas.
